PALMDALE – Students at Highland High School declared their unity Friday by signing a pledge renouncing all kinds of discrimination and by adding their names to the links of a paper chain.

“It’s basically, in kind of a metaphorical way, unifying everybody,” said Grace Malcolm , 14, a sophomore member of Highland’s Tolerance Club who spent part of her lunch break collecting names for the paper chain.

“We’re trying to get all the teachers, all the students, everybody,” Malcolm said.

By end of the “Unity Day” event, the chain of names would be about 700 feet long, organizers said.

The tolerance club also set up table displays in the school commons highlighting messages of cooperation and unification.
